Also, if you're shooting models underwater it can be tough to communicate with them but also tough to get them to open their eyes naturally. There's that big-wig photog in NYC, Howard Schatz, who actually has a pool filled with solution similar to saline just so models can open their eyes! Check out his site if you really want your jaw to drop with underwater possibilities. His pool is also pre-rigged with lighting.
If you're just looking for scuba/snorkeling shots, there are plenty of good sites with tips on equipment. Much of what I've read is to spend as much as possible on a housing-- and even then the seals can leak! You might consider renting until you're sure you're ready for the investment.
