Redo Amy 1940's style
(Michael and Barbara Jarboe)
: We posted an image of Amy from a shoot a couple
: of weeks ago on the N.W. Forum. A number of
: people e-mailed saying that they really
: liked the image. Several photographers said
: they liked the image but that it wasn't true
: to the lighting look of the 1940's.
: We didn't set out to create the lighting of the
: 1940's when we shot the image. But their
: comments got us thinking about playing with
: the image we created and seeing what we
: could do with it.
: This is what we did with it.
: Comments welcome.
: Mike and BarbaraIf I were to set out to recreate a 1940's look (which I have never done, btw... I guess that disqualifies me from holding an opinion), I would recreate the lighting, makeup and intense retouching the period was known for, and not just the attire. I'd go to George Hurrell for guidance. Wearing a fishnet pillbox hat doesn't say "Forties" to me unless it's accompanied by the full look. This image looks like someone in 2003 trying to dress 1940's.
If the only aim was to recreate the fashion look of the time, she's properly dressed. But modern soft lighting and filled shadows loses the illusion completely. Our memories don't conjur up softly lit models and bright backgrounds.

His style typifies the time. While I like your image, it only vaguely remind me of the Forties. People holding such an opinion have a valid reason to say you should have LIT to the period because it feels incomplete to do otherwise. It's good work technically, but it's not a recreation of a time.
