In Response To: flat lighting and highkey??? (PIC) (LINK) (Gabe Choy)

Ah... the look of the days of the big studios and the big stars! Unfortunately, the above image has a very long way to go.

I've had a few friends in photo school take this effort on as an assignment and found it very difficult. First, think carbon arc lighting... then remember the film (plates) of days gone by had very different curves... which is why they looked so good with that carbon arc lighting.

Oddly enough, there is one secret I can pass on. During one of my friends research he discovered that they used to actually sand the plates. Depending on the grit and motion, highlights can be modified and selective softening achieved. How much easier life was before Photoshop?!?

As a side... computing companies have been merging and my email has been once again moved. This time to track the origin of spam, the public one used here is... glamphoto@comcast.net I'll follow up soon with a general post to let everyone know.

Laters,

Jim
