I like the theory, and I don't know the correct answer but if my memory is correct, a 2x converter basically "spreads" the light out, halving the photonic density on the film plane, effectively cutting a stop out, and enlarging the image.
With my D100, the sensor is just small. The lens still concentrates the same amount of light on the film plane, it's just that I have a smaller "negative." If I placed a small piece of film on the film plane, exposed it correctly for a full frame and then enlarged the small piece of film, I'd have an enlargement with no light loss?
