For a photographer "testing" can cover a broad range of basically trying out stuff.
For commercial work you have to be sure that everything is going to work, without any problems. So you test everything beforehand - film, lenses, meters, lighting, exposure - whatever.
Not all of this requires photographing a model - but when it does, the results can benefit both.
Model and photographer should both know what they're doing before they do it - not communicating expectations is probably the biggest problem.
