flying with lights

Anyone have tips for packing lighting equipment for airline flights? Renting equipment where I'm going is not an option. Shell out the bucks for giant Pelican cases? Carpet padding and suitcases? What do other folks do to get them there in one piece without paying enormous extra baggage fees?
