The outfit that was stealing bandwith (and images) was beyond the reach of our laws. And even if they weren't, I needed access to their site (I wasn't a member) to show the image theft.
But my software did track the images to their site(s). When I requested that they block use of my material in their blog spaces, they said they couldn't do a thing. That was a lie, but I had no standing in Dutch courts unless I could jump through a bunch of hoops and spend a lot of money I didn't have.
Ultimately, the DCMA doesn't really work FOR the owners of material. To use that law (assuming they were in the U.S.), I needed to know the exact spot where you could find the images. Without a membership, I couldn't get that information.
I decided not to pay them.
So, the fix was layering some code to make it a little more difficult on them. So far, it has stopped my three major sources of "leakage."
But I'm sure they'll find new and clever ways to get at the image cache. That's why the notice stays up, and stays the way it is. When things change again on the thieves' side, maybe somebody will have some new defenses.
Since you're ultra-clever with code, maybe you'd like to write something that allows images to be viewed while throwing in even more of a disconnect to those who want to link them.
