Image and bandwidth theft has been a major issue with my website. In short, there is no magic pill to prevent image theft. If someone wants your photograph, all they need to do is hit the print-screen key and copy it to the clipboard or dig through the browser cache.
I turn off the MIE image toolbar so as not to encourage people to grab images through a meta tag. But, the disable right-click is annoying is easily bypassed.
A server side script which serves an image is a good way to prevent theft of bandwidth, provided that the images are stored in private directory on the server which is not world-accessible. This is what I am doing. I also set and read cookies to throttle bandwidth. A website capture tool or spider can put huge dents into my bandwidth usage for the month, but using a script to monitor bandwidth usage can thwart most attempts.
I have only seen one mechanism for preventing image theft entirely and that required people to download a java applet onto their computer. It prevented the images from being cached and disabled the print-screen capture. But, who wants to do that?
The only foolproof mechanism for preventing image theft is keeping in touch with other photographers and dropping them an email if we find their images with someone else's name on it. In the past, when someone was dumb enough to steal a photograph of mine and post it to Geocities, I would get a flurry of emails telling me about it - and, problem solved in less than an hour.

: The changes I made to femmefete a couple of
: years ago caused some people not to be able
: to view the images. If and when somebody
: develops software that's less intrusive, I'd
: love to use it.: Because software does change over time, I left
: the message in place. The current software
: doesn't really block image theft, but it
: does make it more time-consuming for the
: people who were the major culprits. So, they
: appear to have moved along to steal from
: others instead of from me.: Meanwhile, if somebody does come up with an asp
: script or something that works well with
: asp, it would be nice to hear from them.: There's nothing wrong with putting out notice
: of need, and leaving it there.: As for more about art and less about fetishes,
: sometimes the art is about the fetish. If
: you prefer this version of the work, there
: are bound to be other galleries as I finish
: the revamping of the site that you will not
: like. But that's OK, because I don't plan on
: catering to any one element. The mission of
: the site is to celebrate all sorts of ways
: in which women can and do express themselves
: for me. So, they're the ones providing the
: smorgasbord from which I'm sampling.
