As usual there have been some good responses, and I agree with a lot of what's been said already. One thing not mentioned yet though is the value of tfp in building a peer network. This is one way for serious models and photographers to help each other while at the same time building everyone's portfolio and (hopefully) having fun.
Example: I've done four recent tfp shoots, each with a relatively well known model. We've all posted the images in various places. I've already had inquiries from other photographers about some of the models (forwarded to the models), and models have approached me saying they have seen the posted tfp images. So everybody has had some marketing exposure. We also all have new references to offer, and in a couple of cases we've made new friends. Certainly some of us will work together again in the future. This works as long as both parties do their homework and choose tfp partners who do work compatible with their goals.
Personally, I like to work with a mix of experienced and relatively new models. It keeps things balanced. In the other direction, a model could choose experienced photographers to get guaranteed quality product, but still work with an occasional young and creative type with a fresh vision but some risk of technical shortfall.
