Was this image shot on film or digital?
I can and have built an enlarger, and I write image processing software in my day job (for satellite imagery, but the principles are the same). I've also built several computers and I've built three different cameras, including a 4x5 view camera of my own design. While I agree that an artist should understand his/her tools, I don't see that as making me any more of an artist in either the traditional or digital arena. For me, art is defined by the power of the product to stimulate emotion in and communicate the artist's vision to the viewer. The tools and process used to produce it may define the category of artist, but not the quality or worthiness. As you pointed out, digital photography is not the same process as traditional photography. However arguing that digital is a "lesser" art than traditional photograhpy, or arguing that photography is a "lesser" art than painting, seems ludicrous to me. If you could convince me that a digital image has inherently less ability to move a viewer than a traditional photograph does, I might start to consider the "lesser" art argument, but we all know it does not, any more than a traditional photograph has inherently less ability to move a viewer than a painting has.
I have a long way to go before I consider myself an artist of any merit, but I don't believe that whether or not I pursue digital photography or traditional photography (or both, which is the reality) will be the deciding factor in whether or not I'm able to get there. I prefer to critique and enjoy art based on how strongly it touches my heart, not on the tools used to produce it.
Cool forum, by the way. Thanks for everyone who worked to bring it here. - Tim
