Actually, some years ago I had occasion to see an exhibition which included Ansel's original "Moonrise" print. It was shockingly flat, containing only mid tone grays. It was described as a guide print, which after drying, he used to determine what paper to use, which areas to burn and dodge, which areas to received a warmer soup and so on, all darkroom equivalents of tweaking.
I can't argue film vs digital on a technical basis, to me the technical aspects of photography have always been a necessary evil. I prefer to discuss results, the final image. Before I switched to the 'other camp', I tied an experiment with my private commission clients. I showed them samples of similar prints done with traditional techniques and digital prints made from scans. I had them choose which they prefered from the 11x14 prints. Now granted, there are some differences between images shot digitally and those done as scans, but I found it highly interesting that all of them chose the digital prints. Last month I sold a 16x20 of a B&W digital print to a collector who hd not previously bought from me. After UPS delivered it to her, the email I received described it as being "magnificent". Printed on Epson's line of fine art papers, I have shocked myself with the quality.
I've always loved film and still do, it's my own personal preference and no digital print will or can ever replace that magic, the magic of watching that something appear from nothing on a sheet of clean white paper. That's a moment which has fascinated me for well over 50 years. I don't maintain digital is better than film and the traditional techniques, but the time has come in which is equal in quality. Which is bettter, painting with oils or acrylics? Sculpting with wood or stone?
